World Down Syndrome Day

Good evening! Today is World Down Syndrome Day, and in the past I didn’t even know that there was such a thing. And really I didn’t know much about Down Syndrome at all, just basic things that most people know. 47 chromosomes, the slight slant of the eyes, the big smiles. That was pretty much the extent of my DS knowledge. I know a few people with DS or with kids who have DS, but that was it.

And then this guy was born. He’s amazing (like all babies, tbh). He doesn’t have any major health problems that we know of so far, and we are very grateful. His parents and siblings adore him and can’t wait to see what life with him will be like. Right now he’s a newborn, so it’s pretty much life with a baby right now.

Today we went to a picnic with other DS families in Austin, and it was our first meetup with them. We had such a great time and met so many wonderful families. I failed to get any pictures from the event other than this picture of a squirrel eating a cupcake (!!!) and one of Win after he sacked out in my husband’s arms.

We did rock our socks, and we took a picture when we got home.

Anyway, now that we’ve been immersed in this new world on a new adventure, I wanted to do something to promote World Down Syndrome Day. My thing is papercrafts, so I made some cards. I made the first two using the colors associated with DS. For the third one I wanted to use a red octopus. My friend Emily, who has a daughter with DS, sent me this book after Winchester was born. It’s wonderful, and so far I can’t read it without crying. It’s really sweet. And 3/21 is because today is March 21st (and it’s 3/21 because 3 copies of Chromosome 21).
