[This card is full of mistakes, and I’m going to tell you about all of them so you don’t make the same ones and also to demonstrate how to save a messed up card through improvisation.]
I’ve had a hard time using Pear Pizzazz, mostly because I was a little addicted to Lucky Limeade, so I was mildly bitter that Pear Pizzazz made it into the new color lineup, and Lucky Limeade didn’t. Haha. I’m holding a grudge against a paper color; I may have a problem.
Enter Crushed Curry. I wanted to use Crushed Curry in this sympathy card for the little weed/stalk things around the goose in the Wetlands stamp set. I love Crushed Curry, but in too high a dose, it can be overwhelming, so it needs to be toned down with a calmer color, in my opinion. I decided to give Pear Pizzazz a shot, and I loved the way the two colors paired together.
I stamped the goose in Chocolate Chip and the weeds in Crushed Curry. Then, as an afterthought, I brushed on some Pear Pizzazz using a half-dry baby wipe. Why a baby wipe? Well, because I ran out of Stampin’ Sponges, and I don’t have one for Pear Pizzazz yet. I wasn’t trying to use a technique — I was just improvising. I do recommend that you use a baby wipe that is almost completely dry, or use the Watercolor Paper. Mine was a little too wet, so it left my paper a little weaker. I also recommend brushing or sponging on the Pear Pizzazz before you stamp the goose — you can see my bird is smudged a little around the ankles.
I wanted to put the button on the little log next to the sentiment, but I needed it next to the goose, because I cut him out a little wonky, and the grass at his feet ended almost a half inch from the edge of the oval. It didn’t look right, and I’d already stamped him three times, so I covered it up rather than redo the goose again.
As you can see, I tore and distressed the Pear Pizzazz mat. I did this after the strip of Woodgrain-embossed Crumb Cake paper and the goose were already glued on. I didn’t do it on purpose. One edge of my mat got a boo-boo, so to fix it, I tore off the boo-boo. And then I just kept going until I liked how it looked.
I must have been really tired when I made this one — I don’t usually have to fix quite so many mistakes. But anyway, they don’t all come out perfectly, but if I wanted perfect, I wouldn’t make my own cards, right? :)

Okay, maybe not the best thing ever (Braum’s limeade on a hot summer day, my Texas friends?), but still pretty stinking cool. See, this is the outside:

The best part is that they’re simple to make. Stampin’ Up!’s Pop ‘N Cuts dies make a card base in one step and the pop-up insert in the next step. They’re so easy but look really hard and make the giver look amazingly talented.
I chose the colors and papers so I could play along with the Fab Friday color challenge.
I’m in love with Sweater Weather paper, as you know. I even bought the digital download for My Digital Studio so I can use it in my hybrid scrapbook pages. Look at the close-up of this paper.
The pattern looks like a knit sweater; I adore it.
The “twigs” behind the leaves on the pop-up are from the yummy Burlap ribbon in the Holiday catalog. I pulled it apart strand by strand, then glued the strands onto the pop-up using the Multipurpose Liquid Glue. Then I added the leaves, using Dimensionals between each layer.
The sentiment and the other stamps on the card are from the Best of Autumn stamp set. Stampin’ Up! has released a Best-of stamp set each month in 2013 to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary. If you buy six of the sets, you can send in a card with your proofs of purchase and receive a seventh set for free.

I’m severely gluten-intolerant; a crumb of bread will make me sick for a week, no kidding. So I was amused at Stampin’ Up! Convention when I won the Truly Grateful stamp set, the one stamp set with the giant bunch of wheat in it. I did want the set (available this Thursday in the new Holiday catalog), but I still laughed that I won the wheat stamp.
It’s a really pretty stamp, though. And Thanksgiving is my second favorite holiday, after Christmas, and it’s only four months away, so I clearly needed to make my first ever Thanksgiving card.
I found this fun sketch at the Paper Players and had to play along. I pulled out the Sweater Weather paper (also available this Thursday) since it is so perfect for fall cards (and baby cards, masculine cards, baby books…) and chose my colors from there.
The card base is Soft Sky, one of the new-ish colors. I then embossed a piece of Very Vanilla using the Woodgrain folder and lightly sponged on some Sahara Sand ink to give it a birch-y look. For the horizontal strip of paper, I used Chocolate Chip, which I embossed using one of the Needlepoint Borders folders. I think it adds a little something, and the Needlepoint Borders have that kind of homey country feel that a Thanksgiving card should have. Before I adhered the Chocolate Chip strip, I attached a piece of Champagne Glimmer Paper underneath it, just to give my Thanksgiving card a little bit of unexpected sparkle. I love the effect that just a little bit of glimmer paper gives to a card! Then I added those wonderful little Soft Sky Candy Dots.
I added the strip of Sweater Weather paper using Dimensionals. I stamped my
poisonwheat in Chocolate Chip on a piece of Very Vanilla cardstock. “Why, Sarah, you’re an amazing artist to be able to make that so pretty!” Oh, thank you, but the stamp does all the hard work. I stamped it, then colored in the image with Crushed Curry and Soft Sky markers. And I didn’t spend a lot of time coloring. I cut the wheat out using one of the Ovals Collection framelits, then lightly sponged the edges in Soft Sky ink and added the wheat to the card using Dimensionals.
For my sentiment, I first punched 3 little chevron arrows out of the Regals Backgrounds Designer Series Paper Stack using the awesome new Chevron Border punch (available Thursday!) and attached those. The sentiment is from the Truly Grateful set, stamped in Chocolate Chip. I cut the sentiment using one of the Chalk Talk framelits, then cut off the bottom half with a pair of scissors.
