Christmas in the Making

Lemon-Lime Twist, of course! It’s a close race with Berry Burst, but I find myself using LL Twist on pretty much every card I make now. And this year, my favorite color combination for Christmas cards is going to be LL Twist with Real Red. It’s so merry and bright!

This card features one of my favorite new stamp sets from the Holiday Catalog, Christmas in the Making. I stamped this adorable lady in Archival Basic Black ink on Shimmery White cardstock, then colored her with Aqua Painters (the dress) and Blender Pens (everything else and the stripes on the skirt). This stamp is so meta when you put it on a card; love it!

After I colored the image, I cut it out with one of the Lots of Labels framelits. The background Lemon-Lime Twist mat is embossed with the Cable Knit dynamic embossing folder. After I popped the colored panel up on the card, I very carefully added Embossing Paste as snow. I probably should have done this before the panel was attached to the card. I smoothed the paste on and added the lines of texture by sticking the tip of one of my Palette Knives into the paste and swirling it around to make it look more like snow. After I let it dry a little, I added some Dazzling Diamonds glitter. That little bow on top comes from Holly Berry Happiness and the Holly Builder Punch, and the sentiment is from Christmas in the Making.

Hello! This is the third of FIVE projects that I’m showing you today, so make sure you click on my blog banner so you can scroll through all five blog posts. And go HERE for an explanation as to why I’m bombing you with posts today.

This Creative Crew card is for the Inspiration challenge. I was inspired by the above photo of the rainbow cake that has M&Ms or Skittles spilling out of it. I decided this would be perfect for one last, fun hurrah for my beloved Cake Crazy stamp set. Y’all, this stamp set! I have grown to love it. I’ll be keeping this one, even after it retires.

Here are some tips for recreating this card:

*The base is Thick Whisper White. Then Real Red, then Daffodil Delight. The main panel with the cake is Thick Whisper White.

*I embossed the cake first, stamp by stamp. This is easiest if you use a MISTI, but you can certainly do it without the MISTI, especially if your stamps are clean and not stained black or anything. The bottom layer is two different stamps. It’s easiest to stamp the silver-embossed stamp first. Emboss it in silver and hit it with your heat gun, but just until it turns — don’t give it a little extra heat, or you’ll burn it when you emboss the white stamp. The diamonds in the white-embossed stamp line up between the silver dots, and the white icing layer fits perfectly around the silver circles at the top of the layer. That’s how to line those up.

*The second layer, do the white first, then the silver. The third layer is only done in silver, and I left out the complementary stamp for that layer just to let more of the color show through. The top layer is also only one stamp. This stamp has a design on it that is really adorable, but it does lose the design when you heat emboss it. It’s just a little too fine for embossing the design, but great for stamping in color.

*After I stamped the cake, I used my Aquapainters and ink from the ink pads (with a closed ink pad, squeeze the ink pad to get ink to rub off on the inside of the lid, then open and use the lid like a palette) for a little Watercolor Emboss Resist. Though I stamped the cake from bottom to top, I colored it from top to bottom, mainly because I wasn’t sure how many colors I was going to fit on the cake, and I didn’t want to start with purple at the bottom and have no red at the top. My colors here are Real Red, Pumpkin Pie, Daffodil Delight, Old Olive, and Pacific Point. After coloring the cake, I wiped the ink off of the embossed cake with a dry baby wipe.

*To get the splatters all around the cake, I picked up each color of ink again with a fairly wet Aquapainter, then tapped the Aquapainter sharply against my desk, just over the paper, several times. You could also use one of the splatters from Gorgeous Grunge. Then I wiped off the cake again.

*The Glitter Enamel Dots are from the new Color Theory Suite (coming June 1 for customers), and they’re one of my favorite things in the new catalog. I use them all the time now. The Pacific Point 1/4″ Stitched Edge Ribbon is also coming June 1. I LOVE this ribbon.

*I stamped the sentiment from the (coming soon) Birthday Delivery stamp set, then hand-cut the banners. I glue-dotted one end of the banners to the knot of the ribbon, then stacked 3 Dimensionals under the middle of the banners and 1 Dimensional on the other end. I wanted it slanted and funky, just like my cake.

Whew! I hope you like my card. This turned out to be one of my favorite recent projects and made me even sadder that Cake Crazy is retiring. Get it while you can (only guaranteed until May 22)!
